On a gloriously warm day in Estoril, Lorenzo was the first rider to emerge on track in the morning session. The reigning MotoGP World Champion’s quickest lap of the morning sitting was 1’37.170 which was 0.240s ahead of Edwards. The Spaniard was absorbed on new electronic components and working on the suspension of his factory M1 machine. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider worked on the race setting from yesterday, as did Stoner. Edwards and his team were also trying to find more grip from modifications on the chassis.

Estoril race winner Dani Pedrosa called an early halt to his test session after only carrying out a few laps. The Spaniard tried a new clutch and worked on the race setting of his factory RC212V, but was in too much pain to carry on and will now rest in the lead up to the next MotoGP race in Le Mans. Pedrosa was fifth fastest, just over half a second slower than Lorenzo’s fastest lap.

Edwards and Crutchlow make optimistic start in Qatar

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team made a bright start to the 2011 MotoGP World Championship in Qatar, Colin Edwards and Cal Crutchlow both concluding with points in the season opening night race.

Edwards made a sweltering start from the 10th position on the grid and was looking to force his way into the fight for the top six when he lost time by organization slightly off line at the second corner. Dropping back into 10th behind team-mate Crutchlow, he rapidly moved up to ninth to launch a pursuit of 2010 team-mate Ben Spies.

He closely followed his compatriot for the opening five laps, the 37 year-old setting a time and again fast pace in the mid-1'56" bracket. He shadowed the fast starting Hector Barbera until lap nine when he moved into eighth position. But he had lost too much time trying to pass the Spaniard to maintain the pressure on Spies and he finished eighth.

Crutchlow made an imposing MotoGP debut at the Losail International Circuit having started in front of Valentino Rossi and Edwards on the grid. Hampered again by the nasty left little finger wound he suffered during the pre-race test in Qatar less than a week ago, Crutchlow rose to the occasion brilliantly, fighting for the top ten for most of the 22-lap race.

He was right on the back of a group battling for ninth that was headed by Nicky Hayden, Hiroshi Aoyama and Barbera. But like Edwards previous in the race, Barbera proved tough to overtake and Crutchlow lost contact with Hayden and Aoyama with three laps remaining. He was satisfied for his determined performance when he swept by Barbera on the final lap to finish a enormously encouraging debut in 11th.

The American was also in certain mood about the 2011 season with the gap race in Qatar on March 20th, and said in the attached video interview: “I think we’ve got a good shot this year so I’m excited. I’m really happy with the package. To get in the top five this year I think will be a tall order for anybody. You have a lot of fast factory guys up there and there should be some entertaining racing.”

Edwards concluded: “I’m sure in 2011 Jorge would like to repeat what he did in 2010, but we’ll see. There’s a lot of stiff competition out there and there should be some good racing when it gets happening.”

MOTOGP: Rossi Tears Down The Wall

Walls in-between MotoGP pits have become commonplace in recent years and even teammates that get along, such as last year's Tech3 combination of Colin Edwards and Ben Spies, have preferred the divider. Spies has stated he felt it helped his guys cut down on the disorder in the garage.

“Good fences make good neighbors,” wrote Robert Frost a long time ago. And there’s amazing to it.

But as he so often does, Valentino Rossi astonished MotoGP observers by saying he wants to buck the trend this year. Rossi’s recent comments at the Ducati team statement in the Dolomite Mountains echoed Ronald Reagan’s “tear down this wall” speech.

Rossi said he wants no wall and for the two riders to share data and to assist fully in Ducati’s 2011 assault. While Nicky Hayden and Casey Stoner had very different setup preferences for the paddock’s most sole handling machine, Rossi and Nick are closer.

Teammate Hayden raced next to Rossi at Honda years ago and there is a level of admiration between the two riders that allowed them to coexist then and now.

Recap 2010: Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix

http://motogp-f1-races.blogspot.com/motogp's complete summary of the ninth round of the season at the Laguna Seca offers you the chance to re-live the best of the action, with easy one-click access to the video highlights.

Marking the halfway point in the season – the ninth of 18 rounds on the 2010 MotoGP calendar – the Californian sunshine welcomed the premier class to the Laguna Seca in late July, and provided the chance for the premier class stars to enjoy some of the glitz and glamour thanks to the close nearness to Hollywood.

Taking advantage of that were Jorge Lorenzo, Ben Spies and Colin Edwards, who were connected by the MotoGP legends Eddie Lawson, Kenny Roberts and Wayne Rainey as Yamaha riders past and present were treated to a trip around the American TV presenter Jay Leno’s extensive collection of cars and motorcycles. Meanwhile over on Sunset Beach, Dani Pedrosa was surfing and then took a skydiving lesson in a wind tunnel courtesy of Red Bull.

The serious commerce began at the pre-race press conference where Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Spies were joined by Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden. The famous Laguna track was also navigated by MotoGP legend Kevin Schwantz, who gave a tour of the circuit layout.

Tech 3 confirm Edwards for 2011

http://motogp-f1-races.blogspot.comThe American has signed a one-year extension with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team and will partner incoming with rookie Cal Crutchlow next season.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3 have confirmed that Colin Edwards has signed a one-year contact extension to remain with the MotoGP team for the 2011 season, thus combining his vast experience with the potential of the rookie Cal Crutchlow.

Fresh from his 100th race with the Yamaha at the Gran Premio A-Style de Aragón on Sunday the announcement was made that 36 year-old Edwards would remain with Tech 3 next year, continuing a partnership with the French outfit that started in the 2008.

“I’ve finally come to an agreement with the Hervé and Yamaha. I’m happy to stay and it’s been a long relationship with Yamaha, I think 1986 was my first contract with them back in my motocross days! I want to say a big thanks to the Hervé because along with Yamaha he made it happen,” said Edwards.

“I don’t know if next year will be my last one, I’m just looking forward to pushing as we normally do and riding hard. If Yamaha need something I’m always there, the other three Yamaha guys are going to be young. I’m just looking to fight and have fun.”

Commenting on his link-up with the 24 year-old British rider Crutchlow, who will arrive from WSBK, Edwards added: “I think it will be interesting. I don’t know Cal well but he’s young, he’s hungry and he’s ready so I’ll be here to help out if I can. I’m still looking for that first win so I’m still hungry too!”

Poncharal was just as pleased to be able to confirm the 2011 line-up for his team and said: “I’m happy that even though we have a few races to go for this season we have decided that we will have Cal Crutchlow and Colin Edwards in 2011. Colin, Tech 3, Yamaha and myself all agreed that we will have another year together. Colin has been really good to Yamaha and to Tech 3 and has given us lots of great moments with some really good results.”

“This is a good line-up and for sure Cal will be looking forward to hearing Colin’s advice and hopefully he can help him like he helped James Toseland and, this year, Ben Spies. This year the atmosphere between Colin and Ben has been excellent.”

Commenting on the aim for 2011 Poncharal concluded: “I think Colin wants to do one more season in MotoGP and he’s shown that even though he’s not in a position to win races he’s fast enough to be a strong MotoGP rider and brings a lot of information to the team and the factory. He’s helping us to strengthen and I think he’ll be like an advisor for Cal.”
